Carbon Monoxide Detector

All occupied residential properties, including mobile homes, and all
existing rooming houses, SHALL be equipped with
carbon monoxide (CO)
detectors. Combination smoke and
carbon monoxide detectors are acceptable. Exemptions for entirely electric
heating/cooking systems may be available under R.I. State Fire Safety Codes.

Carbon monoxide detectors are required in residential buildings even
though they may already have a fire alarm system.

A CO detector should be installed outside each bedroom door as per
manufacturer’s specifications. More than one detector may be required.

A carbon monoxide detector may be required in a bedroom if a heating
unit, either portable or permanent (but not electric), is located in the
bedroom.

If bedrooms are off the kitchen, the CO detector will be located
in the kitchen near the bedroom entrance but not near APPLIANCE (stove,
heater).

FIRE SAFETY CODE BOARD OF
APPEAL AND REVIEW FILE NO.: 08-05,
battery operated CO detectors, but NOT plug-in style, are
acceptable in existing 1, 2, or 3 family residential occupancies.

New construction shall have 120volt electrically wired (with battery
backup) CO detectors.

Effective July 1, 2005, detectors shall have "hardwired" carbon
monoxide detectors in all existing 4-families and up.

At the time of sale, a carbon monoxide & smoke detector inspection
for 1-3 family residential will be conducted for a fee of $30.00.
Please contact the Fire Marshal's Office at 765-2500 & press # 3, for an
appointment at least 3 weeks prior to your closing date. Said certificate
expires 60 days from date of inspection.
